George Eastman (Montgomery Clift) vai trabalhar na fábrica de um rico tio e começa a se encontrar com uma funcionária chamada Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters), mas quando ela, grávida, descobre ter sido trocada por uma mulher rica, não aceita tranquilamente. Ele, um homem ambicioso, fará de tudo para ninguém descobrir o caso.

O compositor Franz Waxman (1906–1967) trabalhou em "Sayonara" (1957), "Crepúsculo dos Deuses" (1950) e "Rebecca, a Mulher Inesquecível" (1940)
