Bobby (Jesse Eisenberg) é um jovem aspirante a escritor que conta com a ajuda de seu tio Phil (Steve Carell) e resolve se mudar para Los Angeles por desejar trabalhar como roteirista. Lá, se envolve com a secretária de Phil, Vonnie (Kristen Stewart), que mantém um relacionamento secreto com outra pessoa.
