Matthew McConaughey está no papel principal do filme
Durante a Guerra Civil Americana,Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) reúne um grupo de pequenos fazendeiros contra a Confederação, o racismo da Ku Klux Klan na região e a escravidão nos estados do sul.
O compositor Nicholas Britell também assina as trilhas de Nova York, Eu Te Amo (segment "Natalie Portman") (2008), Gimme the Loot (2012) e em A Grande Aposta (2016).
