Foi essa a condição que Roger Waters colocou, ainda em 1989, para tocar na Alemanha, então ainda dividida entre Oriental e Ocidental. No final deste mesmo ano, David Hasselhoff fez história ao fazer um show exatamente no meio do Muro ainda em pé. Um show para os alemães. Para a Alemanha pronta para ser unificada e virar país que é hoje.
Irredutível, Waters só fez sua apresentação quando o Muro estava no chão. Com o Pink Floyd separado há quase uma década, o cantor e compositor ainda buscava se desvencilhar da imagem da membro da banda com sua turnê, mas ainda tentava recuperar um pouco de seu prestígio. Era o momento em que se juntavam duas coisas: a população, ansiosa por um evento de grande porte, e um cantor que ainda tentava se realocar no showbiz.
Hoje, The Wall: Live In Berlin é um momento histórico. Primeiro, por mostrar ao mundo a capacidade de Waters em transformar o repertório do Pink Floyd em um algo grandioso. Segundo, com Scorpions, The Band, Marianne Faithfull, Joni Mitchell, Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, Paul Carrack e Sinead O’Connor como convidados, ele dava a todos os alemães a chance de ver atrações de sucesso pela primeira vez em anos.
A apresentação foi transmitida via satélite para 35 países e transmitido em 175 rádios dos Estados Unidos. Se Hasselhoff fez história meses antes, Waters retomou sua carreira de maneira grandiosa em um show que viraria história.
